Calculation of Debate Speaker Awards

Most Stoa tournaments unknowingly use software settings that give speaker awards based on a formula that combines speaker points and speaker ranks. This formula excludes a competitor’s two highest and two lowest sets of speaker points and speaker ranks. In the end, only two of a debater’s six ballots are considered for the speaker point part of the formula. Likewise, only two of the six ballots are considered for the speaker rank part of the formula.

We may choose to use an alternative formula that includes four, or perhaps all six, ballots. We may also choose to use a formula that provides less weight to speaker rankings.
